# The ExP Group: student back office moved to Laravel and Livewire

> An e-learning back office for accountancy students, moved to Laravel, Livewire, Alpine.js and Tailwind with no lost features, plus adaptive video and analytics.

## Overview

The ExP Group runs online courses for accountancy and finance qualifications. In 2023 George Barbu of InfoWebPlus worked on the front end of its student back office: the logged-in platform where students follow their courses. The job was to move a system that was already in daily use to a modern stack, keep every feature working, and add new ones on top.

## The client

The ExP Group ([theexpgroup.com](https://www.theexpgroup.com)) sells online courses for ACCA, CMA (USA), DipIFR and FIA, as its website shows on 2 November 2026. Students study through video lessons, tests, mock exams and tutor support.

## The challenge

The back office was an older system that was already in active use. Rebuilding it meant:

- **No loss of features.** Every existing function had to keep working, so the old system was analysed in detail and the new one tested against it before switching.
- **No disruption.** The move had to be smooth and stable, with minimal impact on students and internal processes.
- **New features at the same time.** The platform also had to gain new video and analytics functions during the migration.

## What we built

- **A new front end on Laravel.** The interface was rebuilt with Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js and Livewire, integrated with Laravel as the backend framework, replacing the legacy code. Front end and back end were coordinated closely to keep the pages responsive and dynamic with a consistent data flow.
- **Course pages with a clear learning path.** As the screenshots show, each course has a lesson list and steps from learning phase and practice to exam simulation and webinar, with study plan, bookmarks, downloadable materials and a contact-your-tutor button.
- **Video players that adapt to the student.** Several video players choose the right video source based on the student's country and internet speed. That needed backend logic, a front end that adapts, and performance optimisation across different conditions.
- **A student dashboard.** Each active course shows time progress and learning progress, with an estimated completion timeline, days left, tutorials watched and tests taken.
- **Analytics.** New analytics tools give the organisation detailed insight into user behaviour and platform usage, to spot bottlenecks and improve engagement.

**Stack:** Laravel, PHP, Livewire, Alpine.js, Tailwind CSS and JavaScript.

## Where it stands

The screenshots on this page come from the 2023 project, from George's own portfolio. A sign-in username has been removed from one of them. We do not publish usage or performance figures that we cannot back up, and the client's public website today may differ from what they show.

## What a business with an internal system can take from this

- **Migrate without a big bang.** Map every feature of the old system first, then prove the new one does the same before switching users over.
- **Use the move to add value.** A migration is a good moment to add the features users have been asking for, such as better video delivery or reporting.
- **Pick a stack your team can maintain.** Laravel with Livewire keeps most logic in one place, which makes a back office easier to change later.
