Full analysis

Ask most people what builds SEO authority and they will say backlinks. They are not wrong, but they are only telling half the story. Citations, mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other sites, work differently, and most brands invest in one while quietly neglecting the other.

Two different jobs

A backlink is a vote of relevance and authority: another site is telling search engines your content is worth pointing to. A citation is a vote of identity: a directory, a platform, or a publication confirming your business exists, with a specific name, address, and phone number. Backlinks help a specific page rank. Citations help the entire brand get recognized as real. You genuinely need both, and neither one substitutes for the other.

Building the citation side deliberately

Backlink building tends to get the attention (and the budget) because it is easier to point to a specific result. Citation building is quieter, but Entity Stacking exists specifically to build that side deliberately: a real, verified set of branded profiles across trusted directories and platforms, instead of the scattered, inconsistent citations most sites accumulate by accident over the years.

If you already invest in link building or content but have never deliberately built your citation footprint, that gap is worth closing, and it usually shows up clearly in a full SEO audit alongside everything else worth prioritizing.
