Problem

The school needed one app for Android and iOS that keeps teachers, students and parents in touch in real time and uses the same data as its existing web platform.

Solution

In 2025 InfoWebPlus built the app from scratch with React Native and Expo on the school's REST API, with messaging, push notifications, grades and a media gallery, and published it on Google Play and the App Store.

Full analysis

Liceul "Luca" is a private school in Bucharest. In 2025 George Barbu of InfoWebPlus built its mobile app for Android and iOS from scratch, connected it to the school's existing platform, and published it on Google Play and the App Store.

The client

Liceul Teoretic "Luca" (scoalaluca.ro) offers education from nursery to high school in Bucharest, as its website says on 2 November 2026. Teachers, students and parents already used the school's web platform, which has its own REST API.

The challenge

The school wanted one app for Android and iOS that feels the same on both, keeps teachers, students and parents in touch in real time, and uses the same data as the web platform. It had to be built and published with little technical overhead, including everything around the stores: developer accounts, the latest OS versions and store compliance.

What we built

  • One codebase for Android and iOS. The app is built with React Native and Expo, which avoids separate native builds and works on both macOS and Windows development machines.
  • Connected to the school's platform. The app uses the school's existing REST API, so grades, messages and other data match the web platform.
  • Two-way messaging. Teachers, students and parents can message each other, with an inbox, search and paging.
  • Push notifications in real time. A notification system built with Expo Notifications reaches phones straight away.
  • Grades and academic performance. Grades and academic performance are available in the app.
  • Photo gallery. A media gallery for class and school event photos.
  • Secure sessions and roles. Redux manages global state and keeps secure, persistent sessions, including login state and user roles.
  • A consistent design system. Tailwind CSS through NativeWind keeps layouts consistent on different screen sizes.
  • A reproducible setup. Docker containerises the development environment, and the Metro bundler gives fast refresh during development.
  • Publishing on both stores. From setting up the developer accounts to the App Store and Google Play releases.

Stack: React Native, Expo, Expo Notifications, Redux, Tailwind CSS (NativeWind), REST API, Docker and Metro.

Where it stands

The app is listed as Liceul "Luca" on Google Play and the App Store, checked on 2 November 2026. The screenshots come from George's portfolio and show test data, not real students or parents. We do not publish download or usage figures that we cannot back up.

What a school or service business can take from this

  • Build on the system you already have. Connecting the app to the existing API means one source of truth and no double data entry.
  • One codebase can be enough. For most apps, a cross-platform build is faster to ship and cheaper to keep up to date than two native apps.
  • Plan for the stores early. Developer accounts, reviews and OS updates take time and belong in the plan from day one.
